MUSLIMS in Chorley will be getting a new mosque, if planning chiefs give the go-ahead to the proposed development.

The Chorley Muslim Trust has submitted plans to Chorley Borough Council to build the mosque on land at the corner of Charnock Street and Brooke Street, next to an existing mosque.

Original plans were passed by borough councillors last year, but the new application is for a slightly larger building on the same site.

It is expected a decision will be made at the council's planning committee meeting in June.

Councillor Mary Wilson, who represents Chorley East ward, said: "I welcome the application and I'm extremely pleased that Chorley's Muslim community is staying in East ward."

A small Muslim community has lived around Chorley's East ward for nearly 30 years, but has previously worshipped in a residential-style property formerly used for offices.

Alan Croston, the council's head of planning services, said: "The application is a variation of permission that already exists.

"The Muslim Society now wants to make the building bigger than was originally intended.

"Residents in properties in the immediate area will, of course, be notified of the application and any objections raised will be considered by the committee."
