A CHORLEY student who struggles with dyslexia could be in line for a prestigious national education award.

Hannah Charlesworth, 18, who attends Runshaw College, Leyland, is one of five hopefuls short-listed for the BTEC National Achievement Award at the Edexcel Achievement in Education Awards.

If Hannah wins, she will receive £1,000 to spend on an educational activity or item of her choice and Runshaw College will also receive £1,000.

She will also be entered for the Outstanding Student of the Year Award.

John Kerr, chief executive of Edexcel said: "Hannah is a remarkable student and has shown great strength of character throughout her studies."

Hannah, of Derek Road, Whittle-le-Woods, won her place on the awards shortlist after demonstrating great tenacity during her studies, despite reading and writing difficulties because of dyslexia.

Outside of school, Hannah is a volunteer leader at Clayton-le-Woods Christian youth club and each summer she also helps organise adventure holidays in the Lake District for 12-to 15-year olds.

After completing her current BTEC course, she hopes to go on to university to study to become a teacher. Hannah said: "I was only diagnosed with dyslexia last year and I have had to learn to deal with it and not to let it become a barrier to what I do. My achievements proved to me that my dyslexia wasn't an obstruction to getting good grades and showed I was able to attain above the level expected of me."
