From the Evening News, May 16, 1903: THERE was not a single case for the Magistrates to hear at Bury County Police Court, sitting at Radcliffe, today, and the Chairman (Mr Heys) was presented with white gloves.

Congratulatory speeches were made. The Magistrates' Clerk said that was the first time in two years white gloves had been presented at Bury County Police Court. Residents undoubtedly were now better behaved.

THE New York newspapers announce today that Professor Goodspeed, of the Pennsylvania University, has discovered that rays of light come from human bodies, making the taking of photographs in a dark room quite possible.

CROWDS braved the wind and rain to congratulate Bolton Wanderers on their promotion to Division One. Despite the weather almost 2,000 supporters of all ages turned out and turned the town centre into a carnival of white, blue and red flags yesterday. Members of the victorious team were waved along the route as they travelled in an open-top bus from Burnden Park to a specially erected stand in front of Bolton Town Hall.

THE new Mayor of Bolton, Counc. Adam Hibbert, called for a big community effort to clean up the town, at his inauguration today.

He condemned "the ever-present problem of litter and general unsightliness which defaces our streets and much vacant land."

He went on: "It is a task which should engage the attention of everybody with any degree of pride in our borough."

THE Ashburner-st. Market has been brightened this week-end by newly hoisted Coronation decorations and the arrival of the first strawberries. The strawberries come from Holland and cost 10s (50p) per lb, or, less breathtakingly, 2s 6d (12p) per quarter. Next on the luxury list are grapes, black ones, at 3s (15p) per lb and green at 4s 6d (22p).

Cauliflowers cost between 11d and 1s 6d (4p and 7p), and new carrots 1s 2d (6p).
