CHORLEY had to work hard to win this gritty league game at Ashton on Sunday as Wigan fought to take a share of the points.

Despite taking an early lead through Sally Spencer they allowed Wigan to get back into the game when a floated cross beat the defence and Peri Gavin was at hand to thump the ball into the back of the net.

But 20 minutes from time Spencer pounced on a mistake by the Wigan keeper to tap the ball over the line to give Chorley the win that keeps them on track to have their best ever season in the Premier League.

But they face a daunting task on Thursday when they travel to league leaders Newsham.

Final score:

Wigan Ladies 1

Chorley Ladies 2
