TOM Lancashire picked up yet another title on a busy weekend for Bolton Harriers.

The 17-year-old took his latest county title in the Greater Manchester Schools at Leigh, as six of the club's athletes qualified for the English Schools Championships.

Lancashire won the senior boys' title with ease, followed by Tim Ellis in fifth and Matthew Lang in eighth. Both will also qualify for the eight-strong county team.

In the junior girls' event, last week's Northern Champion Rachel Pounds finished second to Bury's Laura Evans.

Liz Holt also ran well, holding off another Bury athlete to take bronze.

The intermediate race saw Katie Smith continue her return to the excellent form she showed last season, with fifth and a place in the team.

Meanwhile, two of the club's star track performers were in action indoors as Manchester's Sport City hosted the Northern Indoor Athletics Championships.

Hazel Carwardine was fifth in long jump and Michael Smith clocked a speedy 7.03 seconds in the 60m sprint.

Also in championship action, Matt Lockett and Pete Edmondson ran superbly for Birmingham University in the British Students' Championships in Oxford.

Lockett finished 18th in a high class field and picked up a silver team medal, Edmondson finished third in the B race.

Dave Shaw and Ian Selby both ran personal bests in the Alsager five-mile race, Andy Parker finished 17th.

Chide is Horwich double diamond

TWO wins for Howich RMI Harriers U11 athlete Chide Onwudike in the final fixture of the Greater Manchester Sports Hall Athletics League secured the runners-up spot for the squad on the day and in the final league standings.

Chide won both the three lap time trial (43.8) and the standing long jump (2.06m, 25cm in front of second place).

She was only just denied her hat-trick of wins by the smallest of margins when she finished second in the one lap event by just 0.1 of a second.

There were also victories for Katherine Eccles in the B U11 standing long jump (1.75m) and for Horwich's sole U15 representative Kirsty Milner in the six lap time trial (1.34.2, over three seconds in front of second place).

The Harriers now look forward to the Greater Manchester Sports Hall County Championships tomorrow at the Dome.

Meanwhile in cross-country several young Harriers performed well in last Saturday's School's Championships. Notable Harrier girl performances representing Bolton Schools in the Greater Manchester Championships in Leigh, included Katherine Cole who finished fifth inter girl (years 10/11) and Kirsty Milner who was ninth junior girl (years 8/9).

In the Lancashire Schools competition held at Witton Park in Blackburn, Rachel Thompson had a great run representing Blackburn Schools, finishing second in the senior girls race.

Last weekend was also a busy and successful one for the senior Horwich Harriers among whom Paul Muller won the Chernobyl 10K Multi terrain race in Preston in a time of 33.47.

Next Sunday sees the club's 21st Annual Winter Hill Fell Race starting from Rivington Hall Barn at 10am. Entries for this challenging 11-mile event close on Wednesday. If you wish to enter please contact race organiser Tony Varley on 01204 669570.
