WHEN reader Ernie Ford visits Westhoughton Library, he enjoys looking on microfilm at old editions of the Horwich and Westhoughton Journal.

He recently saw a 1928 edition, and took from it a few stories, which he thought might be of interest to others.

For instance, at that time, Genuine Danish Roll Bacon cost 10d (4p) per lb, Prize Danish Butter 1s 9d (10p) per lb, and at the Bolton Co-op Drapery Sale, Blanket Parcels were 50s (£2.50) each.

The report of a wedding told of how the Rev. P. Garret officiated at the marriage of Mr John Broadly Wilkinson, a mill manager in India, to Mrs Alice Holden, of Wigan Road, Westhoughton. The reception was at the home of the bride, and the couple then left for their honeymoon at Llandudno. (Ernie, of Esther Fold, Westhoughton, tells me that the marriage produced twins, Geoffrey and Jean. Jean want on to be a West End star, and featured on TV in the serial "Harpers West One").

Another story told of how the British Lwegion Orchestra was making great strides and "expects to make its first public appearance next month. Practices are held by eight members every Wednesday. Of the members, only one is a lady. Surely there are enough lady musicians in the town to form the basis of a really good mixed orchestra."

On transport, a report said that at the end of January, "Lancashire United Transport & Power Co. are starting an Omnibus service from Westhoughton to Manchester. 1s 2d (5p) single and 1s 9d (10p) return. The first bus will start at 7.05am and the last bus returns at 10.05pm".

And at the Palce Cinema, Church Street, Monday and Tuesday was featuring the film "The Man Without Nerves", with Harry Peel; on Wednesday and Thursday, "The Big Night", with Laura Le Plant was showing; on Friday and Saturday, Harold Lloyd was appearing in "For Heaven's Sake".
