CHILDREN at a Leigh school are having bags of fun with a new reading project.

A number of pupils at Twelve Apostles RC School are being given StoryBags containing a fiction and non-fiction book, a story tape with personal stereo player, a toy, prop or puppet and a parent guide, as part of a drive to improve reading standards.

The StoryBags scheme was launched by assistant headteacher Sheenagh Newton, the school's literacy co-ordinator and Year 2 teacher. She has held two meetings with parents to explain the objectives of the programme and to hand out the first of 19 bags, which have been funded by the education action zone with extra bags purchased by the Leigh school.

She said: "We want to stimulate children into a love of books and reading."
