WORKERS at Westhoughton-based information technology firm Anker are to have American bosses.

An affiliated company of Los Angeles-based Gores Technology Group (GTG) is to acquire Anker BV.

Anker, which is based in the Netherlands, has its UK and Western European headquarters on the Wingates Industrial Estate.

The Westhoughton workforce of just over 300 has been told that the Anker balance sheet will be transformed by the move.

A statement to workers reads: "There will be access to new capital which will ensure a much more aggressive strategy to build our market share."

A company spokesman said: "It is a very positive move."

Anker acquired Riva Group plc -- founded in 1978 in Caroline House, Bradshawgate, Bolton -- in 1999.

Riva -- originally Riva Turnkey Computer Systems -- was a major success story during the 1980s and 1990s.

The company establishing a reputation throughout Europe for 'electronic point of sale' (EPoS) computer software, used at tills in major retail outlets.

At one time, the company employed more than 1,000 staff.

John Foulkes, Anker's chief executive officer, said the company was delighted with the GTG deal.

Mr Foulkes said: "It is a very positive step forward in the history of Anker and will enable us to achieve our ambitious growth plans."

Vance Diggins, GTG's chief executive officer, said: "We view this as a strategic European acquisition.

"This will further enable GTG to enter a market sector with exciting growth potential."
