NOW that the festive season is over, it would seem to be an appropriate time to comment upon the Christmas decoration of Victoria Square.

Earlier in the year, we had been promised an ice rink surrounded by snow-covered trees, which sounded most attractive. The reality, however, was somewhat different. While the size of the rink building was in keeping with the surroundings, there was little point in having the snow-covered trees if they were going to be hidden behind barriers covered with ugly banners. If it is necessary to advertise the sponsors, a small notice board with their names listed is sufficient.

The lights in the Square are long overdue for improvement. Those between the lamp posts need replacing, and the ones in the trees are so small and sparse that they are ineffective.

The biggest disaster was the huge container which housed the Tumble Jungle in Oxford Street and completely blocked the view of the Square and the lights from Deansgate.

If the shops want to bring in business, they should make sure that the town is attractive for people to come to see. They could start by decorating their windows. Blackpool businesses thrive because people go to see the lights.

Maybe next year!
