AN initiative to bring classical music to the people of the North-west was due to kick off today, with an unlikely string quartet performance at a supermarket.

The BBC Philharmonic has teamed up with North City Arts to make music "pop up" in unusual places.

To launch The Pop Up Project, BBC musicians were due to perform in the Asda supermarket, at Harpurhey, this afternoon.

The BBC Philharmonic is one of five BBC orchestras, and is based in Manchester.
