A MAJOR revamp of Bolton's Moor Lane bus station is set to take place early next year.

More than £300,000 will be spent on the station, with most of the cash being used to improve access. Benches will be removed to make way for individual seating, older litter bins will be replaced and the manager's office will be relocated to a more prominent position.

work on Bolton's bus station follows a refit of neighbouring Bury's bus-tram interchange. The plans for Bolton also include user-friendly signs, speaking information points, induction loops for the hard of hearing and improved lighting.

The cash has come from the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTA) following consultation with disability groups.

Cllr Andrew Fender, chairman of the GMPTA, said: "The authority is committed to making public transport more accessible and easier to use for everyone."

Work will commence in the New Year. Bolton deputy council leader Cllr Guy Harkin, who represents Bolton on the GMPTA, said: "The feedback we've received so far on similar work carried out at other bus stations has been very positive.

"The money granted by the authority should go a long way to bringing about greatly improved bus station services."
