TWO men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a Bolton man died under the wheels of a freight train.

The men, aged 20 and 18, from the Manchester area are believed to have walked into a police station last night. They were due to be questioned at a police station in Manchester City Centre throughout today.

British Transport Police said father-of-one Trevor Hall, aged 33, of Firwood Grove, Tonge Moor, was killed after being pushed into the path of the slow-moving train at Manchester's Piccadilly Station on Saturday.

He had been waiting for a train to Bolton as he returned home following a night out with friends.

Today, family liaison officers were helping Mr Hall's grieving family come to terms with their loss.

Det Sgt Iain Collier, of British Transport Police, said unemployed Mr Hall was not attacked or robbed.

The train driver spotted a group of young men "messing about" on the platform shortly before 6am and witnesses at the scene said they saw one of them push Mr Hall into the train's path.

It emerged today that Mr Hall may have asked one of them for cigarette papers.

Det Sgt Collier said: "There does not appear to have been any sort of threat or aggression. It appears to be completely motiveless."

CCTV camera images of a group of men at the station have been released by detectives. The men are thought to have got into a taxi at the station and were taken to the Denton area.

British Transport Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them on 0800 405040 or call Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
