LOCAL amateur rugby league's big pre-season competition, the Carlsberg Tetley Champions' Challenge, gets underway later this month.

The competition kicks off on July 27 and 28 with hosts Leigh Miners keen to retain the Grainey Trophy.

The Miners start their defence on the 28th when they meet Spotland, kick off 3.30pm. Spotland, coached by ex-Oldham and Swinton player John Prince, are newcomers to the tournament.

The draw has thrown up an all-Wigan first round tie between Rose Bridge and St Pat's. This game kicks off at 1.30pm on the 28th.

The previous day last year's beaten finalists, Leigh East, kick off the competition when they play Warrington side Crosfields, kick off 1.30pm.

Crack Cumbrian side Hensingham are also in the tournament. They will play Halton Simms Cross on the 27th, kick off 3.30pm.
