TWO schoolchildren are set to become ambassadors for Bolton while leading some of the world's greatest sportsmen to Commonwealth Games glory.

Bethany Bond, aged 10, and Scott Riley, aged 11, will stride into Manchester's new multi-million pound sports stadium as mascots for the teams in the rugby sevens final.

They are both keen rugby fans and practise their own skills as part of a tag team at St Paul's Primary School, Astley Bridge.

Bethany, who lives in Halliwell, goes to watch Warrington Wolves with her dad, Peter, and cannot wait to meet some of the planet's best players.

Mum Alex said: "She's really excited about getting the chance to go to the Commonwealth Games. She talks about it every day.

"Her dad will be going to watch her. I'm trying to get a ticket, too, otherwise I might have to watch the match on TV at home."

Scott, who lives in Astley Bridge, supports Wigan Warriors like his dad, Carl. Scott is tipped to become a top player in the future.

Mum Susan said: "Scott has taken a big interest in rugby and he seems to be quite talented. He can't believe he's going to the Commonwealth Games."

Lucky Scott and Bethany were picked to become mascots after playing for St Paul's in the Greater Manchester Youth Games in Wigan.

The organisers were impressed with the school's tag rugby team and asked teacher Katie Jones to choose two pupils for the Commonwealth Games sevens final.

The teacher said: "It was a tough decision, but Scott and Bethany are so keen on rugby that I had to pick them.

"It will be an experience they will be able to tell their grandchildren about. I'm sure all of our pupils will be cheering them on."
