THE heart-broken family of teenager Gary Odlum, who died after being punched in Bolton two years ago, has raised £6,000 in his memory.

A sportsman's dinner attended by one of the town's greatest goal scorers, Frank Worthington, brought in the cash which is to go towards the Bolton Evening News Coronary Care Appeal 2002.

A plaque will be placed on the wall of Gary's favourite pub, the Horwich Park Inn, in memory of the 19-year-old from Kearlsey

Another memorial will also be put in the coronary care unit which has yet to be built.

Gary's uncle, Simon Robinson, helped bring in the cash by auctioning shirts worn by Bolton Wanderers soccer stars Fredi Bobic and Gudni Bergsson. The unwashed shirts fetched nearly £1,000 between them at the dinner staged at Horwich RMI on May 31.

Gary's family is still coming to terms with the youngster's death but feels comfort from the knowledge that his memory will live on in the town.

He died after being punched outside Bank Street Taxis. He would have been 21 this year.

Laszlo Hamar, of Edgworth, was jailed for four and a half years after admitting manslaughter.

You can raise money for the Bolton Coronary Care Appeal in many different ways, from sponsored coffee mornings to opting for donations at birthdays. It is a registered charity and aims to raise £1 million to build a new heart unit at the Royal Bolton Hospital. It has already raised over £500,000 since it started in February.

The new unit will have 10 fully monitored beds, larger working station for nurses, a relatives room, office space and kitchen area. It will also have two "step-down" beds. You can call fund-raising staff on Bolton 390111.
