ROAD humps will create a bumpy bus route through an estate in Farnworth, according to upset residents on neighbouring streets.

The council is installing humps on Highfield Road as part of a traffic calming scheme following complaints from residents about speeding cars.

But Ron Wolsoncroft, of adjoining Meads Grove, fears they will delay buses and emergency vehicles and that slower traffic will cause jams on adjoining Plodder Lane.

"I don't believe the idea is going to work because I'm sure many of the joyriders who speed up and down the road will enjoy racing over the humps and see it as a challenge," he said.

"The only thing it will do is prove a nuisance for buses and ambulances when I am sure there are plenty of alternatives to help slow traffic, like speed limit signs." Sign writer Mr Wolsoncroft did not get a letter from the council saying he could object to the scheme because he does not live on Highfield Road.

But he said: "It still affects us directly and I think people on our street should have had the chance to give our views but now it seems it has been done and dusted."

A council spokesman said: "There have been a number of accidents on the road where a factor was cars not keeping to the speed limit.

"The scheme aims to keep speeds down and make sure cars keep within the 30mph limit.

"We did consult widely on it and the plans were available at the local area forum meeting.

"Work on the scheme is being advertised and any objections will be considered."
