Wanderers hopes of signing Taribo West seem to be floundering due to the Nigerian World Cup stars huge wage demands writes Richard Mulligan

Although Sam Allardyce has splashed the cash to attract high paid aces Youri Djorkaeff and Jay Jay Okocha to the Reebok Stadium, he has not been able to reach a deal with West, the former AC Milan and Inter defender.

The fact that West changed agents while talks were taking place last week did nothing to help matters.

"Things are not looking good," said club spokesman Danny Reuben.

The Wanderers rumour mill has been in overdrive this weekend as the club have been linked with a host of talent from home and abroad.

Paris St Germain right-back Bernard Mendy could be set for a move to Bolton on a season's loan, with a view to a permanent move.

However, there is no foundation in the suggestion that Allardyce has been in talks with the former Manchester United defender Ronny Johnsen over the past four weeks.

One centre-half who may well be putting pen to paper with Wanderers is club captain Gudni Bergsson, who could again put his plans to practice law in his native Iceland on the backburner.

The veteran will be continuing his talks with the club later today about a further one-year deal at the Reebok.

A pleased chairman Phil Gartside said: "We are confident Gudni will be with us again next season."

Meanwhile squad player David Norris is set to join Swindon Town on a year's loan.
