PLEASE allow me to commiserate with the BMW car driver who, when charged with speeding, blamed it on a defective speedometer (July 3).

Some people buy prestigious cars for head-turning effect as well as performance, comfort and general engineering excellence.

This driver appears to have been very unfortunate to have faulty equipment on such a pinnacle of excellence, when hundreds of common or garden private hire cars use their speedo to reckon fares. The comfort of this car must be out of this world if one cannot sense the difference between 70 and 110 mph.

I sincerely hope, for the sake of all concerned, that no one connected with BMW reads the Bolton Evening News on July 3.
