CELEBRATED opera diva Dame Kiri Te Kanawa heads an international all-star line-up of singers and musicians in a vibrant festival of music celebrating the arrival of the Commonwealth Games.

The Bridgewater Hall will be presenting Pulse -- International Festival of Rhythm, from July 13 to 26.

Two weeks of live performances will feature diverse strands of orchestral music, jazz and world music. The festival will culminate with a Royal Gala Concert on Saturday, July 26, when Dame Kiri Te Kanawa will top the bill.

In addition to 11 evening concerts, the hall will also host free foyer music, story-telling and workshops designed for people of all ages.

Other famous names performing will include trumpet player Wynton Marsalis (July 23), Abdullah Ibrahim (July 14), Anoushka Shankar on the sitar (July 15), organist Wayne Marshall (July 16), percussionist Evelyn Glennie (July 17, and with pianist Philip Smith on July 19) and the Kathryn Tickell band (with Evelyn Glennie on July 18). Orchestras include the Halle, BBC Philharmonic and Manchester Camerata (3pm, July 21).

The event opens at 7.30pm on July 13 with the BBC Philharmonic.
