A NEWLY-WED couple returned home from their honeymoon to find their home had been badly damaged by a fire -- started by the groom's father.
It is believed he was house-sitting for his son when a discarded cigarette started the fire at the terraced house on Old Road, Astley Bridge.
The flames caused severe damage to the ground-floor living room and the rest of the house was badly smoke damaged. The man who was minding the house, who has not been named, was rescued by firefighters and was taken to Royal Bolton Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation and burns to his foot.
One cat was rescued from the fire but another died.
Two fire crews from Bolton North and Bolton Central took around an hour to put out the fire. The blaze was reported just after 6.30am on Sunday.
