FOOD is a subject close to my heart and this week I have decided to let you know about some of the latest edible items -- or food related items -- to reach the shops.

RISO GALLO has just launched Bomba Paella Rice (around £1.59) -- just perfect for recreating those Spanish paellas we enjoy on holiday. It is short grain and retains a firm texture when cooked. It is grown in Valencia, in south-eastern Spain, and will help you make the perfect paella. It can also be used to make other Spanish specialities too. I have tried it for my own version of a traditional paella and it is great. Look out for it in local supermarkets.

GREGGS has developed its second super oval-shaped sandwich. The first was a chargrill flavour chicken oval bite and now we have the cheese and spicy pear chutney oval bite (£1.65). Basically it is a delicious oval-shaped, glazed and seeded bap filled with cheddar cheese and pear chutney. The name "bite" is incredibly misleading because this is a big sandwich just perfect for huge appetites. Available from Greggs shops.

ORGANIX has a new addition to its range of cereal bars for children. The Organix Apricot Cereal Bar (49p) is made with natural, organic ingredients and does not contain any nasty added ingredients. They are in major supermarkets.

RUSSELL HOBBS' new classic meat fork (£14.99) is a great gadget for checking barbecue food is thoroughly cooked. It tests the meat taste and temperature at the touch of a button. It is a battery operated food probe and is suitable for use with poultry, pork, lamb and beef -- or any meaty product you care to cook over coals. Available from Argos, Index, Currys and Comet.

REDWOOD COMPANY'S vegetarian breaded fish-style fingers (£2.49) are ideal for veggies and anyone concerned about over-fishing and the threat to cod and hake stocks. They look just like fish fingers and are made from soya and wheat protein. Look out for them in good health food stores, including Holland and Barrett.

FRESHBAKE is a Salford firm and has come up with a tasty low fat, low calorie pie no less. Microbake pies (around 69p each) cook from frozen in the microwave in just four minutes and are available with puff pastry or mashed-potato toppings. The mashed-potato topped pies come in at well under 300 calories and have just 5g of fat per 100g. The fillings are chicken and vegetables, minced beef and vegetable and cheesy vegetables. Available at major supermarkets.
