PUPILS at a school which was placed in special measures only 15 months ago are now feeling on top of the world.

A group of seven youngsters at the Deane School were thrilled after passing the first ever set of "World Class Tests" in maths.

Pupils Ksjenia Gorlova and Caitlin Smith did especially well as they gained a "merit" in the gruelling exam.

The Year Nine pupils' success in the Maths exams means they are among the brainiest top 10 per cent of pupils in the country.

The successful candidates, who were all aged 13 when they sat the exam earlier this year, were Simon Nuttall-Worsley, Robert West, Leonid Tarassov, Kelly Ledwidge and Amin Ahmed

The AQA examinations board has launched the new set of tests to measure the ability of teenagers all over the world.

Head of Year Nine at the secondary school, Martin Witter, was so pleased with his pupils' hard work that he treated them to a night out ten-pin bowling.

He said: "The kids really deserved praise for doing so well.

"We had no idea how the exams would go, but we'll enter pupils in the future because it's good for them to think they are among some of the best in the country."
