Pupils from six secondary schools in the town will be competing against hundreds of other young people in the Greater Manchester Maths Challenge.
The event, which is held at Manchester University, involves 250 pupils aged 11 and 12 solving all sorts of maths problems and brainteasers.
This year's challenge will include a Commonwealth Games theme.
Bolton schools taking part will be Harper Green from Farnworth, St Joseph's from Horwich, the Deane, Thornleigh Salesian College, Withins and Westhoughton High.
