A 1901 FA Cup winners' medal won after one of the most famous football matches ever staged in Bolton is expected to fetch up to £12,000 at auction.

The 15 carat gold medal was presented to Edward "Teddy" Hughes after Tottenham Hotspur beat Sheffield United 3-1 in the Cup Final replay at Burnden Park.

Due to catering miscalculations by Bolton's bakers, the event became more commonly known as "Pie Saturday", as thousands of meat pies were left unsold on the day.

The medal will go under the hammer at Bonhams in Chester and is expected to fetch a high price because of its age carat - modern medals are nine carat gold.

Dan Davies, sport consultant at Bonhams, said: "We expect the medal to go for between £9,000 and £12,000. There are a lot of Spurs collectors about and this is one of the earliest FA Cup final medals."

Mr Davies added that World Cup medals have been known to fetch between £80,000 and £90,000.

In 1901, Spurs, with Teddy Hughes on their side, drew 2-2 with Sheffield in the Cup Final at Crystal Palace.

The decision to hold the replay in Bolton on April 27 was greeted with great enthusiasm by locals, and the Wanderers put up special seats on the cycle track, the Embankment was terraced and it was reckoned 50,000 could be easily squeezed in.

However, railway companies refused to provide cheap travel facilities and a lower than expected crowd of 20,000 watched the match.

At the time the final had only been played outside London three times and the 1901 match was only the 30th FA Cup Final ever held.

Centre half Hughes started his football career with Formby before joining to Everton and then later Spurs in 1899.

He also won 13 Wales caps before he retired and emigrated to Springfield, Massachusetts.

Also under the hammer will be two Bolton Wanderers autographed FA Cup final dinner menus from 1953 and 1958 which are expected to fetch £380, and a Crown Staffordshire ceramic plate commemorating Bolton's 1958 FA Cup Final triumph which was presented to directors, players and staff could go for up to £150.
