UP TO 40 people had to be evacuated from their homes when a gas pipe caught fire in the middle of the night.
They had to stand at the end of their street for two hours while fire-fighters and engineers made sure it was safe for them to go back to bed.
The residents were allowed back into their homes in Stanley Road, Platt Bridge, just after 2.30am today.
