BOLTON Arena tennis academy has got its first students into Wimbledon.

Just over a year since it was set up the academy will be represented by David Sherwood and Jonathan Marray at the greatest tennis show on earth.

The pair earned a wild card into the doubles competition with a brilliant performance at Surbiton, where they beat two pairings who are both ranked in the top 100 in the world.

David, aged 22, and Jonathan, 21, are among 15 members of the Bolton Arena academy squad. They are both from Sheffield but have had to move to Bolton to be a part of the full time training at the academy which is run by Jim Edgar who predicts they will be the country's top doubles pair before long.

"In the next five years they will play David cup doubles," said Edgar, tennis manager and head tennis professional at the Arena.

In singles David is ranked around 600 in the world and Jonathan at more than 700 but at doubles they are a far more dangerous proposition and have already won a number of titles carrying modest prize money.

Jim believes they have a big future ahead of them, explaining: "Doubles is a completely different game to singles and you get players who do much better in one than the other.

"David and Jonathan are an excellent doubles pair who fully deserve to get the wild card to play at Wimbledon and I believe they are going to go on and be the next Davis Cup doubles pairing when Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski stop playing."
