A LEIGH nursery devastated by fire only days before its 30th anniversary is set to celebrate -- one year late.

Last June the Stonehouse Nursery was preparing to party when two classrooms and an outside toy store were destroyed in an arson attack.

Now the Etherstone Street Early Years and Family Resources Centre has risen from the ashes, a bigger and better place, and centre manager Margaret Tucker is inviting past and present children, families and employees to join the fun on June 26 at 1pm.

She said: "We were forced to cancel the celebration last year but we didn't want the year to go by without marking the milestone.

"The fire was devastating but we have put it behind us and have a bigger building complete with dining room. It is better for the children and families that use the centre." The nursery, which opened in 1971, caters for one to five year olds, but also provides a service for youngsters up to the age of eight.

Wigan social services department also use it as a contact centre where children can meet separated parents on neutral ground.

Anyone interested in joining the celebrations should contact the nursery on 01942 674556.
