A MAN claimed he was protecting his parents when police arrived and found him carrying a knife.

Adrian Taylor, aged 20, of Bolton Road, Bury, told officers someone had threatened to firebomb his mother and father's home.

However, after laying down the eight-inch kitchen knife he was restrained by an officer who was then met with a hail of abuse.

Taylor was charged with using or threatening unlawful violence and a racially aggravated offence. He pleaded guilty to both.

Bury magistrates court heard yesterday how Taylor had received a series of telephone calls from a man who went to the same school as him. The man made several threats and said he would firebomb his parent's home. The defendant went to his parents' home and woke them up, but the man soon came knocking at the door.

A fight began between Taylor and the man who had made the threats. He later called a group of friends.

Taylor ran out with a knife when they arrived and his parents then contacted the police. He claimed he never meant to use it. Taylor, from Bolton Road, Bury, was fined a total of £450 with £69 court costs.
