A MOTORIST branded a "menace to the public" was today starting a three-year jail term.

Glynn Knight, aged 34, was jailed after a judge told him he had one of the worst driving records he had seen. Knight had 34 previous court appearances for 150 offences, of which 22 were for disqualified driving.

The court heard that Knight had sped off on three occasions when challenged by police because he knew he was a banned driver. In one incident, Knight failed to stop and drove at high speeds through residential areas when children were leaving school.

Knight, aged 34, of Tennyson Road, Farnworth, appeared at Bolton Crown Court for sentence. He admitted two counts of dangerous driving, three charges of driving while disqualified and two offences of driving without insurance.

The court was told that Knight failed to stop in Salford in the early hours of April 3.

He was arrested and bailed but was involved in another incident on April 19 when he again failed to pull over when asked by police. He drove off at speed, failing to stop at the junction of Grosvenor Road and Trafford Drive, and turned into Eastham Way in Little Hulton.

Knight drove on the wrong side of the road, through a junction without stopping into Cleggs Lane, eventually smashing into a parked Mercedes van.

Police said he had driven at speeds up to 50mph to 60mph at a time when children were leaving school. On April 29, Knight was seen driving at up to 60mph in George Street, Farnworth.

Jailing him for three years, Judge Bruce Macmillan said: "You have one of the worst driving records it's been my misfortune to see in this court. You clearly represent a nuisance to the public."

He was banned for three years and ordered to take an extended re-test to regain his licence.
