BURY Council is stepping up its fight to bring peace to residents plagued by neighbours from hell.

Tackling anti-social tenants will be the focus of a one-day conference in Bury next week.

The event centres on a recent consultation paper issued by the Government entitled Tackling Anti-Social Tenants for Local Authority Housing and Housing Associations.

The paper, in its opening, states: "The Government recognises the misery and disruption caused by anti-social behaviour, that the lives of many are blighted by the behaviour of an unreasonable minority".

Bury Council's housing spokesman, Councillor John Smith, said: "The consultation paper is intended to focus minds on how to tackle the problem of anti-social tenants and the three themes of enforcement, prevention and rehabilitation, are very much to the fore.

"As a council, we are committed to ensure that everyone can enjoy the peace, quiet and comfort of their own home. "

Councillor Smith added that this was a real opportunity for people to influence and shape the borough's future policy.

The conference, called "Open Space" will be held at The Elizabethan Suite at Bury Town Hall, on Thursday June 20.

Refreshments and a buffet lunch will be available on the day, and anyone wishing to attend should book a place by telephoning 253-6218, as soon as possible.

Organisers should also be informed of any specific requirements, such as wheelchair access, childcare, a signer or translation. Registration will take place at 9.30am and the event will aim to finish at 3pm.
