TRAVEL experts are warning motorists in Bolton that the Golden Jubilee and the World Cup will not keep drivers off the road over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The RAC said it is likely there will be long delays on many routes across the country on Friday as thousands of travellers head off for short breaks.

Many people will be using the Golden Jubilee Bank Holiday, the short-working week and the school holiday as an opportunity to take the week off and head to coastal destinations or, via ports and airports, to foreign shores.

The RAC anticipates that much of the travelling will happen once the schools break-up on Friday and will continue into Saturday, resulting in long tailbacks for those keen to start their holidays.

To avoid long delays, it is recommended, wherever possible, that motorists stagger their journeys over the weekend. With much of the pomp and ceremony of The Queen's Golden Jubilee taking place in London, it is thought there could be a reverse of the usual exodus from the capital with many heading for the city centre to view the celebrations first hand.

Motorists arriving from the north should expect delays on the M1 A1 and M11.

Many towns and cities are planning their own celebrations, which could see roads closed off, and people should plan their journeys carefully, the RAC said.

Congestion is also expected on the M6 northbound, from junction 28 to 32, with traffic heading to Blackpool and the Lake District.
