HUNDREDS of scouts, cubs and beavers celebrated St George's Day by staging a colourful parade in the town centre.

Bolton East and North District Scouts paid tribute to England's patron saint by walking from Victoria Square to the Parish Church holding a multi-coloured host of flags representing the 17 scout, beaver and cub groups.

The Hoover Band provided musical accompaniment for the procession which was held yesterday before a church service attended by the Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Kevan Helsby.

The mayor presented prestigious chief scout awards to two pupils from Birtenshaw Special School, Brian Leech and Peter Barlow, who had worked hard to win the achievement after completing a series of demanding projects.

Bolton East Scouts were presented with a Pack of the Year award.

District Commissioner Barbara Pritchard said: "St George's Day is an important tradition and the scouts, cubs and beavers will always mark it.

"Everyone should be proud to be English and should celebrate such an important day.

"In Scotland, Ireland and Wales they celebrate their patron saints properly and it's a shame more isn't made of our saint."
