DOGS are being blamed for starting a fire in a house by accidentally turning on the cooker as their owners slept upstairs.

A neighbour spotted the blaze in the kitchen of the house in Bolton and Bury Road, Ainsworth, at 1am today.

The dogs accidently switched on the cooker as they attempted to reach a waste bin which had been placed on top of units in the kitchen.

A man, woman and two dogs were led to safety by firefighters.

A spokesman said: "They were lucky. There wasn't a smoke alarm and another five minutes and the kitchen could have been well alight."
