I HAVE read with interest The Heart of Darkness (Bolton Evening News, April 5).
Having just come back from New York, I feel the same way, having visited Ground Zero.
I was there with my son, who is a police officer with the Thames Valley Police Department.
The Church mentioned, St Paul's, is a focal point for hundreds of messages, some written on bed sheets and from all over America. Candles, flowers and, sadly, photos of lost loved ones. I was not the only one to shed a tear.
The look on those firemen's faces is another thing I won't forget.
I took a card from Bolton to Ground Zero and handed it in to the Church.
I was there on the St Patrick's Day Parade, and when the police and firefighters marched through Times Square the crowds went mad.
Photos were carried of lost comrades. The crowds calling "we love you all".
At 12.30, everyone stopped, turned to Ground Zero, and two minutes' silence was observed. Then the loudest cheer came.
I'm glad I went to pay my respects - and the people were pleased that others cared.
