A TEENAGE fund-raiser became the king of pop for the night and wowed crowds with his Freddie Mercury impression.

Brett Ratcliff has become a well known character in Westhoughton for organising charity events.s

But this was the first time the 13-year-old had dressed-up in a bid to raise money for charity and he is now planning to become Tina Turner for the next event.

The Westhoughton High School pupil raised £237 at the concert at Greenfield Club in Wigan Road to help six-year-old Jayne Mortimer, who was born with part of her brain missing.

His turn as the late Queen singer performing "I Want To Break Free" brought the house down as he donned an outfit like the one worn in the famous video, but he is now hoping that his routine as Tina Turner will prove to be another showstopper.

Brett has persuaded a group of his young friends to dress as the Spice Girls, Westlife and there will also be a Motown medley mix.

The proceeds from the event, which will be held at the same club on May 31, will be put towards Westhoughton Carnival's chosen charities.

Brett, of Thorn Well, is keen for more young people to get involved in this year's carnival, which will be held on July 7, and even though he will be away at the time of the event he has organised a cookie stall for his friends to run on his behalf.

The enterprising youngster, who won Horwich Asda's Children's Local Hero contest last year, has also raised thousands of pounds for Ladybridge Primary School where his disabled brother Rhys is a pupil.

Brett said: "I want the carnival to be the best one ever this year.

"I went last year and it was a bit boring -- more young people need to help out instead of just local businesses.

"Doing Freddie Mercury was funny, but I'm not so sure about Tina Turner yet. We'll have to see!"

His mother Gaynor said: "Brett is full of surprises. I'm so proud of him. He never fails to amaze me with his ideas."

Brett hopes to become a marine biologist, but would love to spend a year out between school and university on charity work.
