CASH machine users are being warned about a new con trick being used by thieves to steal money from their accounts.

Police say criminals have been putting a thin, clear, rigid plastic sleeve into the slot to prevent people from gaining access to their funds.

When the user inserts their bank card, the machine cannot read the strip and they are repeatedly asked to re-enter their pin number.

Meanwhile, the thief stands behind and watches what number is tapped in.

Eventually, the user is meant to think that the machine has swallowed their card and walk away.

The thief then removes the plastic sleeve complete with the bank card and withdraws cash from the user's account.

People are being advised to be vigilant and run their finger along the card slot before they put the card in.

They should be able to feel the sleeve because it has a couple of tiny prongs on the front which the thieves need to get it out.

Det Con Steve Mahon from Bolton Police said: "People should always be aware when they are using cash machines.

"Every time they withdraw money, they should look around them and make sure they put the cash into their wallet or purse straight away.

"Always destroy your receipt slips or mini statements because thieves can use them to obtain your account number.

"In the past, I have known thieves mark people's backs with chalk after they have withdrawn money, signalling that they are carrying cash."

Anyone who is concerned about the con trick should call police on 0161 856 5593.
