AN Irish millionaire has not ruled out the possibility of buying a stake in Bury FC if his bid to rescue another cash-strapped club fails.

Businessman John Courtenay has been involved in take-over talks for Third Division Carlisle United since January.

Fellow Irishman and Carlisle manager Roddy Collins was dismissed by the club at the weekend after apparently upsetting club owner Michael Knighton. Later, Mr Collins indicated he and Mr Courtenay would be talking to an unnamed Second Division club over the possibility of buying it.

Talking to the Bury Times yesterday (Mon April 8), Mr Courtenay, whose company holds the Umbro franchise for Ireland, said: "I am aware of the situation surrounding Bury FC. To be honest, I want to do a deal with Carlisle.

"If the Carlisle deal was to break down, then I would consider something else."

Asked if he had been approached earlier by anyone from Bury FC over its perilous financial plight, he replied: "No comment."

Mr Courtenay said he had only visited Gigg Lane once, when Wilf McGuinness was in charge.

"I wouldn't have any integral knowledge of the club now. But if the Carlisle deal falls down, then I'd look at anything else available, including Bury."

Told the deadline had now expired for bids to be lodged to save the Shakers, Mr Courtenay commented: "At the end of the day, they may not get the right bid."
