Tourism chiefs are urging Greater Manchester hotels and visitor attractions not to miss out on the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity offered by the Commonwealth Games.

And to ensure businesses don't lose out, the North West Tourist Board is hosting low-cost one-day seminars throughout April, aimed at helping small to medium-sized businesses gear up for the country's biggest ever sporting event.

Dorothy Naylor, Chief Executive of the NWTB, said: "The Commonwealth Games provide a unique opportunity for businesses across the whole of the North West - not just in Manchester. We're urging businesses to find out how to profit from these opportunities and saying 'be careful not to miss the boat'.

"The seminars also include discussion of issues such as the Disability Discrimination Act, accessible marketing and how to put together short break packages."

Courses scheduled for April are:

16 April Disability Discrimation Act, The Velodrome, Manchester - An explanation of the Act, making clear responsibilities as well as the opportunities for welcoming disabled guests

16 April Hoteliers and the Law, Bolton Arena - Advice and tips from solicitors on how to avoid unnecessary conflict and expensive court cases

17 April Through Other Eyes, The World of Glass, St Helens - A sensory impairment simulation allowing delegates to experience for themselves the difficulties the elderly experience when staying in accommodation or visiting attractions

18 April Short Breaks Packages, National Football Museum, Preston - Explanation of how the Games and surrounding events/festivals offer great opportunities to develop package breaks
