HAVING just read the article regarding a lethal stretch of road, where drivers drive side by side sometimes in the path of oncoming vehicles.

I thought it was just me that thought the way drivers drive around Bolton was dangerous. However, it is not just that stretch of road where this type of driving goes on.

All over Greater Manchester where road lanes are more than seven foot wide 95 per cent of drivers treat them like dual carriageways. It really is annoying when you are waiting at a junction in the correct manor when some inconsiderate drivers decide to jump the queue by overtaking forcing oncoming traffic to swerve out of their way.

I agree with Les Wardle, the secretary of the Bolton group of the Institute of Advanced Motoring who wants work to be carried out to stop this driving side by side on single lane roads. Another road that is also bad for discourteous driving is St Helens road leaving and approaching Bolton. There is a bus lane that is separated by other types of vehicles by a solid white line. This solid white line means no crossing, the amount of times I have been undertaken by drivers using that bus lane just to gain an few minutes.

The next thing that makes me laugh is when you get to the junction of St Helens Road and College Way, the inside lane is for turning left only and straight ahead for buses only, the amount of car, van and lorry drivers that stay in that lane to drive straight ahead is unbelievable. There is no excuse for it there is a great big sign that states, 'ahead only for buses' you can't miss it. These drivers make it difficult for those who are in the correct lane for ahead only wanting to get into that lane when they are allowed to.

Lastly I would also like to point out that it is not always down to drivers themselves driving dangerously, but can someone tell me who in the Highways department comes up with the bright idea of sometimes marking out junctions as two lanes, but then leading into one lane directly after the junction. Manchester Road at Raikes Lane junction for example. Come on you people in the Highways department, have some common sense. Having driven as a professional driver all over Europe and London I find Bolton is the worst place to try and drive by the rules of the road
