A BOLTON-based business which has continued to grow since it was established in 1994 is in the final of a prestigious national competition.

Cash Generator Ltd, which was founded by entrepreneur Brian Lewis, is one of nine finalists in the British Franchise Association's Franchisor of the Year Awards.

The event recognises franchisors which demonstrate outstanding commercial achievement through ethical franchising.

Cash Generator, which is based in Bradshawgate, has seen sales increase by 35 per cent in the past year and is on target for turnover to reach £100 million this year.

Unwanted goods are bought, refurbished, given a full guarantee and sold at half the new price.

Shops -- there are now more than 50 throughout the country -- also sell graded and new stock purchased as end of lines.

They provide instant cash by making immediate decisions on cashing cheques -- usually for a four per cent fee. Mr Lewis, who is from Manchester, was runner-up in two categories at last year's Bolton and Bury Business Awards -- Business Person of the Year and Growth Company of the Year.

The other finalists in the awards ceremony at the Dorchester, London on Thursday, May 23 are: Card Connection, Kall-Kwik, O'Briens Irish Sandwich Bars, Rosemary Conley Diet and Fitness Clubs, ServiceMaster, Signs Express, Snap-on Tools and Toni & Guy.

Sir Bernard Ingham, who is best known for his spell as Downing Street spokesman during Margaret Thatcher's spell as Prime Minister, is President of the association and chairman of the awards judging panel.

The event is sponsored by HSBC and the Daily Express.
