A PEDESTRIAN was killed in an accident with a single-decker bus in Bolton last night.

The 38-year-old man suffered multiple injuries in the accident in Bishop's Road, near to the Lowther Street junction in Great Lever. He was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital but died later from his injuries.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident but believe he may have stepped out in front of the bus. The man is understood to be from the Great Lever area. Police broke the news of his death to his family late last night.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene of the accident at 8.45pm last night. No other vehicles were involved. Police sealed off the road for up to three hours as a police accident investigation team started an investigation.

The bus driver -- 58-year-old Umedali Shamji Alani, from Bolton -- was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital. Police say he suffered shock and minor cuts after the bus windscreen shattered in the collision. He was detained in hospital overnight..

Police say six people were on board the First Manchester bus. None of them were injured. Witness are asked to contact the Bolton Police Traffic Unit on 0161 856 5972.
