THE sub-editing of my article about "Shameful treatment of Prisoners of War" in the Bolton Evening News (January 24), led to certain changes.
Some of these were merely alterations in wording, but others were more serious as they led to a misreading of my intentions.
1. A parenthesis after "terrorism" was excised in which I said that neither Reuters nor the BBC World Service use the term. I wanted to make the point that I was not alone in regarding the term as largely emotive.
2. The words "air strikes" were inserted in the first column. I would never use this phrase as I regard it as part of the sanitised vocabulary of modern war.
3. One sentence in the third column went grammatically astray. It ought to have read "As the POWs which they should be 'outrages..... treatment' are forbidden under Article 3 of the Geneva Convention."
4. In the last paragraph of the article "the rest" was expanded to "the rest of the regime". I was however, referring to the prisoners themselves, and so the appropriate expansion should have been "the rest of the prisoners".
