A SPECIAL meeting of the Bolton branch of the United Society of Brushmakers was held at the Commercial Hotel, on Thursday evening, to discuss the subject of prison labour. Mr John Fairbairn presided and said that they desired a Government inquiry into the matter, for in their opinion it was most unjust that the trades of matmaking and brushmaking should be singled out from the rest. They had no complaint of their trade being one of a number, but the brush trade was already overstocked with men, and those being trained in prison and reformatories had, therefore, no occupation when their term was completed. The meeting passed a resolution that the Home Secretary should be approached in this matter.
