The result left Ian Greaves' side well placed in the league, occupying fourth place in the old Division 2. Meanwhile Bury were threatened with the closure of Gigg Lane by the police unless crowd control measures improved.

BOLTON won a scrappy game away at Chester, with Julian Darby getting the only goal in the fixture , which left them mid-table in the old Division 3, far removed from last week's Premiership success against Manchester United at Old Trafford. In the FA Cup Bolton were drawn against either Emley or Chorley in the first round of the competition.

WANDERER'S lost a 2-0 lead at Barnsley as old boy Neil Redfearn scored both goals for the Tykes.
Colin Todd's side went into an early lead with John McGinlay converting a first minute penalty before Alan Thompson added a second in the 50th minute. Redfearn then hit them with his double goal reply but it still left Wanderers topping the division.
