MAJOR roads in Bolton are among the safest in the country, new research reveals.

But a stretch of the M61 near Chorley was branded one of the worst.

More than 833 roads were assessed and given 'star' safety ratings in the AA investigation. Statistics were compiled using volume and accident levels. Roads with no stars were shown to have accident rates 10 times higher than the best performing four star roads.

The average was between two and three stars. No roads in Bolton recorded a rating of lower than three stars. The worst major local routes were found to be a 15.7km stretch of single carriageway on the A49 Standish to Preston and the A579 from the A580 to Atherton. A 33.4 km stretch of the M61 was given four stars.

The most dangerous major road in Britain was identified as the A889 near Dalwhinnie in the Scottish Highlands. Calls for further road safety improvements have been followed the study.

AA Policy Director John Dawson said: "We have got to make roads more forgiving - everyday human error should not carry a death sentence."
