I AM writing in connection with two letters recently featured in your paper ("Long walk home from the hospital", January 7 and 15).

Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority recognises the importance of public transport links to hospitals. We are committed to ensuring that as many people as possible have a regular bus service to their local hospital, as well as providing all the information passengers need to plan their journey by public transport.

For some time now, a comprehensive information leaflet has been available with details of all bus services to Royal Bolton Hospital. The leaflet, produced by GMPTE, contains a map of bus services to the hospital, along with timetable information and brief details of the bus routes. There is also a detailed plan of the hospital showing the various departments and locations of the bus stops on the hospital site. Copies of these leaflets are available from the hospital or by calling GMPTE on 0161 242 6040.

In addition, since May, 2000, the Authority has funded an Arranged Passenger Transport Service for passengers in the Daubhill, Deane, Morris Green and Lever Edge area, for journeys to and from Royal Bolton Hospital. This is a Phone-Book-Ride shared taxi service, and is available between 9am and 5.30pm, Monday to Saturday. Passengers simply need to phone Tele Cars on 01204 364566 at least one hour before they wish to travel, and they can be transported between any point in the allocated area and Royal Bolton Hospital. Single fares cost £1 and concessionary fares are 40p. GMPTE passes and travel vouchers call be used.

The Authority is also pioneering a day to help promote Green Travel Plans for hospitals. "Sustainable Transport for Hospitals Day" on February 21 will be marked in the North West by a conference aimed at promoting and raising awareness of sustainable transport options for hospitals. This event will explore ways in which the Health Service can work in partnership with transport providers, to develop a more targeted, co-ordinated, and affordable transport system.

By working in partnership with local hospitals, the Authority is endeavouring to provide access by public transport for as many people as possible. I would urge anyone planning a visit to the hospital to call the Greater Manchester Public Transport Information line on 0161 228 7811 (8am to 8pm, seven days a week) for full details of public transport services.
