RESIDENTS in Anderton say they are fed up with continuous roadworks outside their homes - but worse is still to come!

With one lane closed off since last November folk on Babylon Lane have had to contend with noise, mess, traffic jams and lack of parking spaces.

Now United Utilities, who are carrying out the work, have closed the road off completely from February 11.

Sarah Williams, 27, of Babylon Lane, said: "The quality of life here has deteriorated very badly. You find that you have no gas or electricity without any warning. That has to be fixed.

"There have been wing mirrors knocked off cars and noise pollution with workmen here from morning to late at night, but there will be no compensation."

Sarah, who moved to Babylon Lane with her husband in December, added: "It has been going on for so long now people are just fed up with it."

Chorley borough councillor Pat Case, who represents the area, said: "One of the reasons they are to close the road is they will have to dig four metres deeper than originally planned. It seems they did not investigate the site as well as they could have."

Andy Goodfellow, the council's head of engineering and transportation, said: "We have inspected the work and asked the workers to allow residents access to properties. We were disappointed when a couple of days later they slipped back into unsatisfactory work practices."

A spokesperson from United Utilities said: "If people have been inconvenienced we do apologise. We pay attention to the local authority and our customers. For the safety of the workers we have to close the road for a week."

He added: "The plans for digs are not always pinpoint accurate.

"What are on the plans are not always what we find and we have to adapt as we go along. The target date for completion is February 28 which we are set to meet."
