TRADING standards officers went undercover in Leigh, Atherton and across the Wigan area to check bargain getaway offers advertised in travel agents' windows.

As a result, they are warning sun seekers to think twice before being enticed by low prices.

They found 30 per cent of the holidays they checked were no longer available and others had increased by up to £100 or had extra charges that were not included in the price displayed.

By law, if a travel agent is linked to a holiday company they must display a sign stating this in the front of the shop and a similar notice must be shown on brochures.

Wigan Council's principal trading standards officer Alan Blundell said: "This law aims to ensure that customers are made aware that some holidays on offer are in effect 'own brand'."
