A DERELICT house in Farnworth is being transformed into a community building.

The four-bedroom house at 84 Campbell Street is undergoing building work to make it into a £100,000 Urban Care Centre.

Neighbours and businesses had a chance to say what they would like in the centre at an open day.

And ideas so far include IT facilities like Internet access and workshops to support the development of the whole community.

Farnworth Cllr Noel Spencer, who spoke at the open day, said: "The intention is to provide more than a building, to look at the wider picture and employ a more holistic approach to renewal.

"We want to improve local facilities and empower the community by supporting their ambitions for their neighbourhood."

The Little Hulton and Farnworth Partnership has contributed £50,000 and other funding is from Bolton Council and St Vincent's Housing Association.

Funding for staffing, resources and running costs is at an advanced stage. It is hoped that the centre will become a focal point for the revival of the neighbourhood when it opens at the end of May.

Colin Hughes, project manager for Bolton Council, said: "Community involvement is vital -- we need to know what people want."

Community support agencies such as Sure Start, Bolton Wise and Bolton Literacy Trust were also at the event which was at a temporary centre at 82 Georgiana Street.
