IT is unfortunate that your correspondent, Kirsty Adams, did not check the facts you have frequently reported, before questioning what the local Bradshaw councillors had done to represent parents from Longsight CP School and implying they had done little.

Perhaps you will allow me to put the record straight. The facts are straightforward. The local Conservative councillors, Mrs Brierley, Hall and Osborn, have met parents, supported their campaign and advised them of their rights on several occasions. On behalf of the Conservative Group, I have met the Council's Director of Education to discuss other options. Only today I have discussed the matter with Damian Green MP, the Shadow Education Secretary.

It is a Labour councillor who has proposed the closure. The Conservative Group, as you have previously reported, raised the issue from the Executive, through the Council's bureaucratic system to the Scrutiny Committee. There, as parents saw, Labour councillors refused to allow that debate to be taken to the Council.

I am pleased to say that despite these spoiling tactics by Labour cllrs, Conservatives, with Liberal Democrat support, will still be raising the matter at the Council Meeting on February 20. Labour clouncillorss may still use a technical point to stifle debate. If debated, Labour may still use its current majority to support the closure. After all, Labour councillors have advertised their intentions even before debate. All will be revealed next week.

Parents know what support has been offered by my colleagues, the local councillors. Parents know they have indeed represented the people who elected them. I regret that your correspondent has misrepresented these facts.

Cllr John Walsh

Deputy Leader
